I believe that criticism is inevitable in research. However, if they had discussed it with me directly before publishing it in a paper, I could have explained my views in more detail, making the exchange beneficial for both of us. I also felt that when criticizing another researcher’s work in my paper, I should first check with the author directly. Though I have never done so before, I realized it is better to avoid carelessly criticizing others' research.
With these considerations in mind, I have written a paper that briefly summarizes my research to date and responds to those who have criticized it. Below is the summary of the paper, originally written in English.
Is it Wrong to Apply the Intrinsic Rate of Natural Increase to Individuals and Compare It among Genotypes?

Abstract In order to gain insights into the seasonal dynamics of genetic variation in insecticide resistance within a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster during population growth, which we considered the most important ecological factor there, we conducted a series of genetic analyses of resistance factors involved in that population and compared individual-based intrinsic rates of natural increase among resistance genotypes. However, some researchers have argued that it is a misconception to apply the intrinsic rate of natural increase to individuals, because it is a population parameter. We considered that their criticisms were incorrect. In this article, I described our research briefly and set forth the reasons why we conducted these studies.

研究を行っている以上、批判されることは仕方がないと思います。でも、できれば、論文などで発表される前に、直接議論してくれれば、こちらの見解もより詳細に提示することができたでしょうし、お互いに、ウィン・ウィンになれたのではないかと思います。また、私自身も、論文の中で、他の研究者の研究に対して批判するときには、著者に直接確認をとるべきであると思いました。まあ、今までそういうこともなかったのですが、やはり、軽はずみに他人の研究にケチはつけない方がいいと思いました。
これらのことを踏まえて、私のこれまでの研究を手短にまとめたうえで、私の研究に対して批判してくれた著者に対する反論を述べた論文をまとめました。以下に、論文の要旨を掲げておきたいと思います。原著論文は英文ですが、日本語に翻訳してあります。

要旨
現地で最も重要な生態学的要因であると我々が考える、集団が成長する期間のキイロショウジョウバエのある自然集団における殺虫剤抵抗性の遺伝的変異の季節的ダイナミクスに対する洞察を得るために、我々はその集団に含まれている抵抗性因子の一連の遺伝学的解析を行い、抵抗性遺伝子型間において個体に基づいた内的自然増加率を比較した。しかしながら、一部の研究者は、内的自然増加率を個体に対して適用することは考え違いであると議論した。なぜならば、それは集団パラメータであるためであると彼らは主張する。我々は、彼らの批判は間違いであったと考えている。本論文において、私は、我々の研究を手短かに記述し、なぜ我々がこれらの研究を行ったのか、その理由を説明している。
