Then, in Japan, where the issues of a declining birthrate and an aging population are becoming increasingly severe, was it not anticipated that such social challenges would arise in the near future? Unlike British researchers, it may not have been feasible to foresee this immediately after the Pacific War ended, when Japan was in a state of chaos following its defeat. However, I believe that by around 35 years ago, when I was preparing for my high school entrance exams, these issues would have been widely recognized by the general public. This is because, in the mid-1980s, when I was taking my high school entrance exams, one of the schools I applied to actually included a social studies question that required the answer “aging society.” (I could not answer the question and remember writing “reduced reproduction” instead.) After all, the emergence of an aging society had been predicted decades earlier in the UK and other countries, where the severity of the social situation was recognized, and people were urged to take measures to prevent it from becoming a reality. In Japan as well, this issue was included in high school entrance exams decades ago, so it should have been clear that this situation was approaching. Nevertheless, what is the current state of Japan? In addition, I was also reminded of the term "DINKs" (Double Income No Kids). This term was widely used around 1990, when I was about 20 years old, and symbolized the lifestyle of the younger generation at the time, in which both spouses worked and chose not to have children. However, despite the steady progression of the declining birthrate and aging population behind the scenes, these issues were hardly addressed, and DINKs were praised as a "trendy" lifestyle in Japan.

では、現在少子高齢化という問題が深刻になりつつある日本では、近い将来にこのような社会的な状況が訪れることが予期されてこなかったのでしょうか？ イギリスの研究者達のように、太平洋戦争が終結した当時は、日本は敗戦したばかりの混乱した状況だったでしょうから、おそらく無理だっただろうとは思いますが、少なくとも私が高校受験をした今から35年ほど前には、一般の間でも広く認識されていただろうと思います。といいますのは、私が高校を受験した1980年代中頃、受験したある高校の社会の入試問題で、実際に「高齢化社会」と解答させる問題が出題されていたためです（私はその問題に答えられず、答案に「縮小再生産」と記述した記憶があります）。結局、イギリスをはじめとする諸外国では、今から何十年も前に高齢化社会の到来を予期しており、その社会的な状況の悲惨さについて問題提起され、そのようなことにならないように、実際になんらかの行動を起こすように呼びかけられていたわけです。そして日本においても、何十年も前の高校入試の問題にさえ出題されるほどですから、当然その到来が予見されていたはずです。それにもかかわらず、今の日本のこの状況はいったいなんなのか？ さらに、 “DINKs（ダブルインカム・ノーキッズ）”という言葉も思い出されました。この言葉は、私が20歳くらいだった1990年頃盛んに使われていた、夫婦共働きで子どもを意図的に持たないという当時の若者世代のライフ・スタイルを象徴する言葉なのですが、その背後では少子高齢化が着々と進行していたにもかかわらず、それらの問題はほとんど取り上げられることもなく、日本ではDINKsが“トレンディー”だともてはやされていたことも思い出されました。
