I think nursing homes often have memo pads, such as "handover notebooks," to inform care staff of important matters, including residents' conditions and facility events. Similarly, my parents and aunts created their own notebooks to stay in touch while caring for my grandmother. They recorded observations about her condition and important tasks, such as refilling diaper pads. My grandmother stayed in the same nursing home for over five years, from April 2007 until her passing in December 2012. Many details about her care were recorded in this notebook, which spans several volumes. It also notes that I visited my grandmother at the nursing home along with my parents. For example, on a page from around March 2009, the following is recorded:
March 28
Cleaning the room and organizing laundry.
Drinking tea… happily eating “potato cakes.”
Watching high school baseball games on TV… comments like “PL is playing” and “cheerleading is tough."
UDoesn’t know what time it is.
Takahiro (author’s note: myself) helps her do leg flexion and extension exercises… She moves them herself!!

March 29 – Takahiro (author’s note: myself) visited.
She said her leg hurt, so we called a nurse to check on her.
Since she can move her leg on her own and take a bath, we decided to keep an eye on her!!
March 30
Her legs seem fine.
Her face has more “wrinkles” but still has a good complexion.
The swelling in her legs is not a concern.
We brought her winter underwear home.
UShe was not using her hearing aid, so conversation was not possible.
→She spoke calmly when I put it on her.
She combed her hair by herself.
In this way, along with my parents and aunts, I helped care for my grandmother, who had developed dementia and was admitted to a nursing home, while also writing research papers and continuing my study of elderly care.

介護施設などでは、利用者の状態や施設のイベントなどの重要事項を介護職員の間に周知するために、“申し送りノート”のようなメモ帳を作っていることが多いと思います。両親や叔母達も、祖母を介護していくなかで、きょうだいの間で連絡を取り合うために、このような連絡帳を作り、祖母のことで気が付いたことや、オムツパッドの補充などのような連絡すべき事項を、その連絡帳に記録していました。祖母は2007年4月から、亡くなるまでの2012年12月までの5年以上の間、同じ介護付き有料老人ホームに入所していましたが、祖母の介護に関するその時の多くのことが、この連絡ノートに何冊にもわたって記録されています。両親に混じって、祖母が入所していた老人ホームで祖母の見舞いを私も手伝っていたことが記録されているのですが、例えば2009年3月の頃のページには、次のように記録されています。

このように、私も両親や叔母達に混じって、認知症となって介護付き有料老人ホームに入所した祖母の介護を、わずかばかりでしたが手伝いつつ、これまでの研究についての論文をまとめたり、高齢者介護についての勉強を進めたりしていました。
