I selected a few potential jobs based on the condition that they were near my home and applied for interviews online. Until this point, I had worked at various universities and research institutes as a graduate student and researcher. Since my experience was primarily in research, leaving it out would have left my resume nearly empty. Therefore, even though I was applying for a part-time job in elderly care, I included as much of my experience as possible within the available space. I listed my PhD in Biological Sciences as my degree, but when I spoke on the phone with those in charge of hiring part-time workers, I sometimes found that, although they acknowledged the effort I had put into my studies, I was ultimately not given even the opportunity for an interview. At the time, there was said to be a shortage of nursing care staff, and the job market was considered a seller's market. Therefore, I was quite shocked that I was not even given the opportunity to interview for a part-time job. I remember feeling angry at the facilities that did not even give me a chance. Honestly, I also felt very sad, wondering if this is what it means to be "not versatile in the job market."

実家に近いところで勤務が可能であるということを条件として、いくつか候補を選び、ウェブ上で面接の申し込みをしました。このときまで、大学院生や研究員として、いろいろな大学や研究機関を渡り歩いて来たのですが、これらの経歴を書かなければ、私の履歴書に書くことは何もなくなってしまうので、高齢者介護のアルバイトのために提出する履歴書とはいっても、スペースに余裕がある範囲で、これらの経歴をできるだけ余すことなく記載していました。授与された学位として博士（生物科学）と記入するわけですが、アルバイト採用の担当者と電話で話をした際に、これまで一生懸命に勉強して来たことについては一応評価していただきつつも、結局のところ、面接さえしてもらえないということが結構ありました。介護職員が足りないと当時から言われており、売り手市場とも言えるような状況であったにもかかわらず、アルバイトの面接さえしてもらえないことが結構ショックでしたし、面接さえしてくれなかった事業所に対して、少なからず憤りを覚えるとともに、“つぶしがきかない”とはこういうことなのかと、正直、とても悲しい気持ちになったことを記憶しています。
