I had experienced emotional difficulties with the chief care staff, who, during my job interview, asked me about my “caregiving dreams.” I believe I had already decided to leave the nursing home by the time I was arguing with them about the night shift in May—which is why I used my ultimate weapon: a direct mail to the president. While continuing to work part-time on night shifts at the nursing home, I searched for other part-time caregiver jobs, considering my next steps after resigning. Actually, I was hired as a part-time home helper at a local home help service provider and began working two to three days a week in June. Then, in July, I also started working as a part-time care worker at a group home for dementia care in downtown Tokyo. My work at the nursing home continued until the end of July. As a result, I had to juggle two jobs for two months—working as both a visiting home helper and a care worker at the nursing home. For one month, I was even balancing three jobs, including my additional role at a group home for dementia care. I was ready to leave the nursing home at any moment. As a result, during the final month of juggling three jobs, I had almost no days off for 31 days straight. I do not remember much from that time, but I do remember working like crazy.

採用面接時に私に対して“介護の夢”を尋ねてくださった、前述の介護主任とも、お互いに感情的にかなりこじれてしまっていましたし、私自身、社長ダイレクトメールという、いわば最終兵器を持ち出してしまうことになるので、この有料老人ホームを退職する意向は、夜勤シフトについて揉めていた5月中には、すでに固めていたと思います。有料老人ホームで夜勤パートとしての勤務を続けるかたわら、辞めたあとのことを考えて、ほかのパートの介護職を探していました。実際に、地元の訪問介護事業所で、パートの訪問介護ヘルパーとして採用してもらえることになり、6月から週2〜3日程度で訪問介護ヘルパーとして勤務し、さらに7月からは都心にある認知症対応型グループホームで、パート介護職員として勤務していました。有料老人ホームでの勤務は7月いっぱいまで続くことになるので、訪問介護ヘルパーと有料老人ホームとのダブル・ワークは2ヶ月間、認知症対応型グループホームを含めたトリプル・ワークは1ヶ月間続いたことになります。有料老人ホームをいつでも辞められるように、その下準備をしていたわけですが、おかげで、トリプル・ワークをしていた最後の1ヶ月の間は、31日間ほとんど休みがありませんでした。そのときの記憶はほとんどないのですが、しかし無我夢中で仕事をしていたと思います。
