The reality of caring for the elderly at home – its difficulties
However, I also believe that the serious challenges in providing elderly care at home remain unresolved—and if these issues are not addressed, even greater difficulties may await future generations. For example, consider the difficulties faced by elderly people living alone in their communities. Even when moving around town, you may have seen elderly individuals slowly crossing streets or railroad crossings by themselves, making you anxious that they might not make it across in time. Fortunately, I have never witnessed an accident firsthand—but to be honest, I worry that such incidents may become more frequent in the future. My maternal grandmother lived alone for many years after my grandfather, who had been bedridden in the hospital, passed away. However, due to her bad knees, she could not go out as often as she would have liked. In her later years, elderly care services—such as home help under the long-term care insurance system—were not yet available, so I imagine it must have been difficult for her to go shopping and prepare meals. When elderly people live alone, managing their diet, nutrition, and medication often becomes a significant challenge.

在宅での高齢者介護の現実、その困難さ
しかしその一方で、在宅で高齢者を介護することの深刻な困難さは、やっぱり厳然として私たちの前には存在していると思います。それらが解決されなければ、私たちの子孫の前にはさらなる困難が待ち受けることになるでしょう。例えば、独居の高齢者が一人で地域の中で生活することの困難さを想像してみてください。街中での移動一つとってみても、一人で横断歩道や踏切を渡っている高齢者を見かけたときに、歩みがとてもゆっくりなので、渡りきれないのではないかとハラハラとさせられる場面に何度か出くわしたことがあるのではないかと思います。私の場合、幸い目の前で事故が起きたことはありませんが、でも正直なところ、今後このような事故が多くなっていくのではないかと心配になります。私の母方の祖母は、病院で寝たきりだった祖父が亡くなってしまってからは、長い間一人で暮らしていましたが、膝が悪かったこともあり、外出もあまり思うようにできませんでした。晩年の頃には、まだ介護保険制度による訪問介護のような介護サービスがなかったため、買い物や食事の準備も大変だったのではないかと思います。やっぱり、高齢者の一人暮らしでは、食事や栄養の管理、服薬の管理が問題になってくるのではないかと思います。
