The general training course for psychiatric social workers that I took at the welfare college lasted for one year and seven months, from April 2012 (Heisei 24) to October 2013 (Heisei 25). During that time, I completed 30 written assignments as part of the correspondence curriculum and also visited the college several times throughout the year to attend face-to-face classes. Furthermore, I was required to complete mental health and welfare assistance training at two designated facilities affiliated with the college: a psychiatric medical institution and a local welfare service provider for people with disabilities. As someone who had little prior experience studying welfare, the training period lasted about five weeks, with over 90 hours at the psychiatric medical institution and more than 120 hours at the local welfare service provider. Because the training was spread out over several weeks, I could not take that much time off all at once as a part-time care worker. This was also one of the reasons I left the group home where I had been working at the time.

私が受講した福祉系の大学における精神保健福祉士一般養成課程の受講期間は、2012（平成24）年4月から2013（平成25）年10月までの1年7か月でしたが、その間に、通信講座としてレポートを30課題分提出しなければならず、また、1年間の内に何回か、大学のキャンパスまでスクーリングに出かけていって、面接授業を受けなければなりませんでした。さらに、その大学の指定実習施設である精神科医療機関と地域の障害者福祉サービス事業所等の2か所において実施される、精神保健福祉援助実習を受けなければなりませんでした。私のような、これまで福祉についてほとんど学んできたことがない者の場合、実習期間は約5週間におよび、精神科医療機関では90時間以上、地域の障害福祉サービス事業所等では120時間以上の実習となりました。このように、実習がまとまった期間で行われるため、パートの介護職員の分際で、何週間もまとまった休暇を取るわけにもいかなかったことも、当時勤務していたグループホームを退職した理由の1つだったわけです。
