This client had been hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital for a long time but hoped to be discharged and live independently in a group home. He was receiving support for transitioning back into the community. He also had a physical disability and had difficulty walking on his own. When touring the group home, he walked from the hospital to the nearest bus stop on his own, pushing his wheelchair by himself. He looked very tired, and from that point on, he used a wheelchair with assistance. From the bus stop, he boarded a regular city bus in his wheelchair and rode to his destination—the group home. I remember that the trip there went relatively smoothly, but on the way back, we witnessed many of the challenges that people with disabilities face. Even the seemingly simple act of traveling on a regular local bus exposed numerous challenges for wheelchair users.

この利用者の方は、精神科病院に長期間入院されていたのですが、退院してグループホームに住み、自立した生活を送ることを希望され、地域移行支援を受けられていた方でした。この方には身体にも障害があり、自力での歩行が困難でした。グループホーム見学にあたって、まず車椅子を押すという形で、この利用者自身の足で、病院から最寄りのバス停まで歩かれるということになりました。とても疲れたご様子で、以後の移動は車椅子に乗って、介助を受けながらでの移動となりました。バス停からは、車椅子に乗ったまま、街を走っている一般のバスに乗って目的地であるグループホームまで移動することになります。行きは比較的スムーズだったと記憶していますが、しかし帰路において、障害者福祉の前に立ちはだかる多くの困難を見せつけられることになりました。車椅子に乗って、一般のバスで移動することでさえも、多くの困難が待ち受けていました。
