Through this internship, I was able to clearly see that even something as simple as taking a bus is full of challenges for people with disabilities trying to live independently in the community. Traveling by wheelchair is difficult in itself, but beyond that, regular city buses must be properly equipped to accommodate wheelchair users, and drivers must be trained to operate that equipment correctly. In addition—and above all—I believe that the people around them, such as other passengers, should be willing to take the time to look out for them in situations like this. Through this experience, I became painfully aware that even if people with disabilities are to live independently in their local communities, they must overcome many obstacles to make that a reality.

障害者が、地域の中で自立して生きていくことは、バスでの移動といったことでさえも、多くの困難に満ちていることを、この実習を通してまざまざと見せつけられることになりました。利用者が車椅子で移動すること自体、とても大変なことなのですが、その上に、街を走っている一般のバスが車椅子での乗車に対応した装備を備えていなければならないでしょうし、バスの運転手も、その装備をしっかりと使いこなすことができなければならないでしょう。そして何よりも、周りの乗客も、このような状況を見守ってあげられるだけの余裕がなければならないのだろうと思います。このように、障害者の地域での自立した生活とは言っても、それを実現するためには、多くの困難を乗り越えなければならないことを痛感することになりました。
