The small-scale day service center where I began working night shifts as a part-time care worker was set up in an ordinary house. Its appeal was its homey atmosphere—like receiving care in one’s own familiar home or while visiting a close friend. Some users of the day service would stay on into the evening to have dinner and watch TV. As night fell, the users began to settle down to rest. Although the day service center had a nursing bed available, most users slept on sofa beds that doubled as sofas during the day, or on simple folding beds. The next morning, the users would wake up, wash their faces, get dressed, have breakfast, and then transition into the regular day services. Of course, some users may have used the facility on an irregular basis, but there were also those who stayed for extended periods in ways that did not violate any laws.
Even when I was on night shift, only a few users stayed overnight, and they all seemed to show signs of dementia. I believe many of them were using this accommodation service because home care had become difficult, and they were waiting for a spot to open up at a facility such as a special nursing home or a group home for people with dementia.

私が夜勤専従のアルバイトとして勤務することになった小規模デイサービス事業所は、普通の民家がデイサービスセンターとなっていて、いわば、いつも住み慣れている自分の家で介護を受けている、もしくは親しい友人の家に遊びに来ているような、そんなアットホームな雰囲気を売りとしていました。デイサービスに来ていた利用者が、夜間もそのまま留まって夕食を食べたり、テレビを見たりして過ごします。ある程度夜が更けてくると休むことになるのですが、ここのデイサービスでは、介護ベッドもあったのですが、日中はソファーとして使用されているソファーベッドや折りたたみ式の簡易ベッドが寝台として主に使われていました。次の日の朝になったら、起床して洗顔、更衣などのモーニング・ケアを行ったのちに、朝食を召し上がっていただいて、そのまま日中のデイサービスへと移行します。もちろん、不定期に利用されている利用者もいたと思いますが、法律に抵触しない程度で長期的に宿泊されているような利用者もいたように思います。
宿泊されていた利用者は、私が夜勤に入っていた時でも、多くても数人程度でしたが、それぞれ認知症の傾向があったように思います。恐らく、在宅での介護が大変となってきたため、特別養護老人ホームや認知症対応型グループホームなどの介護施設を探されていたものの、例えば、空きが出るまで待たなければならないなどといったことで、この宿泊サービスを利用されていた方も多かったのではないかと思いました。
