I learned a great deal from the care skills training course and found it very rewarding. What surprised me most was that the instructors who demonstrated the care skills never knelt down or sat directly on the floor. In my work at care facilities up to that point, I would often kneel or sit directly on the floor with my knees pulled up to my chest when making eye contact with clients and residents seated in chairs. However, the instructor told me, “Certified care workers do not kneel.” It can be quite challenging, especially when my back hurts, but I think it is natural for certified care workers—who come into contact with bedding when making beds and directly touch clients’ and residents’ bodies—to keep their clothing clean. It made me feel, once again, that I was witnessing the professionalism of certified care workers.
I successfully completed the four-day course and was finally granted an exemption from the practical exam in the national examination for certified care workers. It was a very fruitful and fulfilling four days, and I think it was worth the tens of thousands of yen I paid. I have not kept in touch with the other trainees in my group since then, but I am glad I had the opportunity to learn alongside them.

介護技術講習ではいろいろと勉強になったことが多く、得るものも多かったと思います。特に私が驚いたことは、実際に介護技術を実演してくださったインストラクターの方々が、立て膝をついたり、床にお尻をつけたりしないということでした。私はこれまで、介護施設での勤務において、椅子に腰掛けている利用者と目線を合わせる時に、結構平気で立て膝をついたり、体育座りで床にお尻をついたりしてしまうこともあったのですが、インストラクターからは、「介護福祉士は立て膝をつかない」といわれました。腰が痛かったりすると、結構しんどいのですが、でも衣類を清潔にしておくことは、ベッドメイキングの時に寝具に触れてしまったり、利用者の身体に直接触れてしまったりすることもある介護福祉士としては、当然のことなのだろうと思います。改めて、介護の専門職としてのプロ意識を見たような気がしました。
無事に4日間の講習を終えて、晴れて実技試験が免除になることができました。数万円払ってしまっただけのことはある、とても実りのある充実した4日間だったと思います。この時にグループで一緒だった受講生とはその後音信はありませんが、一緒に勉強することができてとても良かったと思います。
