Elderly clients need to be monitored carefully during meals, as there is a high risk of choking. At the facilities where I have worked, I remember that there were always at least two staff members present during mealtimes. If there are two or more staff members, then even if an accident occurs, one can stay with the other clients on the floor. If an ambulance needs to be called, at least one staff member can remain on the floor, making it possible for the other to accompany the client in the ambulance. Of course, we have to be prepared for such situations. Therefore, to be honest, it was quite tough for me to assist clients with meals on my own after a night shift while also taking care of the other clients. Honestly, I have no idea how the other staff members managed to get through situations like that. However, when situations like this arise, there’s honestly nothing we can do. All we can do is silently hope that no accidents occur and hold on until the day shift staff arrives.

高齢の利用者の場合、食事の時はとても注意が必要になります。と言いますのは、食べ物を喉に詰まらせて窒息してしまうリスクが高いためです。なので、これまで勤務してきた事業所の場合には、食事時は少なくとも2人以上の職員がいたように記憶しています。2人以上の職員がいれば、もし事故がおこったとしても、他の職員にフロアにいる他の利用者のことを任せておくことができます。たとえ救急車を要請しても、少なくとも1人はフロアに残ることができるので、その人にフロアのことを任せて救急車に同乗することも可能になります。そのようなことも当然想定しておかなければならないので、夜勤明けに1人で食事の介助をしながら、他の利用者のこともケアしなければならない状況は、正直、私にとってはかなり過酷でした。他の職員はどうやってこのような状況を乗り切っていたのか、正直わかりません。しかしこのような状況になってしまうと、正直もう何もすることはできなくなってしまいます。ただひたすら事故が起きないように心の中で祈りながら、次の日勤の職員がやってくるまで耐えていかなければならないのです。
