The long-term care service commonly known as “short-stay” is officially defined as “Short-Term Admission for Daily Life Long-Term Care” under the Long-Term Care Insurance Act. It is not only intended to support the independent living of individuals who require care at home, but also serves to reduce the burden on family caregivers by temporarily relieving them from the demands of caregiving. For example, if a family caregiver becomes ill or needs to attend a public event such as a wedding, funeral, or school function, it may be temporarily difficult to provide care at home. By having the person in need of care stay at a short-stay facility, the caregiver can fulfill their social obligations. Needless to say, short-stay facilities can also be used for personal reasons, such as allowing family caregivers to rest or travel, in addition to social obligations.

妻を探し続ける利用者
いわゆるショートステイと呼ばれる介護サービスは、介護保険法の中では「短期入所生活介護」として定義されているサービスです。要介護者の、在宅での自立した生活を支援するためのサービスであることはもちろんですが、在宅で介護している家族介護者の負担感を軽減し、介護の拘束感から解放する家族介護者のための支援という側面も有しています。例えば、病気や冠婚葬祭、学校などの公的な行事に参加しなければならないといった場合、在宅で介護することが一時的に困難になるため、要介護者を一時的にショートステイに短期間入所してもらうことで、家族介護者の社会的な目的を果たすことが可能になります。このような社会的な理由はもちろんですが、家族介護者の休養ですとか、旅行などといった私的な理由でのショートステイの利用も、もちろん可能です。
