When I put it this way, short-stay care certainly seems to offer only benefits—for both the people in need of care and their family caregivers. However, when I actually worked at a short-stay facility, even for just three months, I found it to be an extremely demanding workplace. I have worked in a variety of elderly care settings in the past—including a paid nursing home, group homes for people with dementia, a visiting home help service, and an overnight day service—but to be honest, I found the short-stay facility to be the most demanding. Of course, with fewer staff, a higher salary naturally came with a heavier workload. However, more than that, what made the job extremely demanding was dealing with users who appeared to have dementia during the night. I would like to explore this further below.

このように述べてみると、確かにショートステイは、要介護者にとっても家族介護者にとっても良いところばかりのように思われますが、3か月という非常に短期間とはいえ、私が実際にショートステイで働いてみると、ショートステイは職場としてとても過酷だと思いました。私はこれまで、介護付き有料老人ホーム、認知症対応型グループホーム、訪問介護ヘルパー、お泊まりデイサービスといった介護サービスを提供していた様々な介護事業所で仕事をしてきましたが、正直、ショートステイが一番きつかったと思います。もちろん、職員が少ないため、給料が高くなった分、仕事の量もそれだけ多くなり大変だったということもありましたが、それ以上に、認知症の傾向がある利用者に対する夜間の対応が、とても過酷だったためです。以下において、少し考察してみたいと思います。
