In the case of short stays, it takes time for users who appear to have dementia to adjust to moving from their familiar homes to an unfamiliar facility—one they may have rarely seen or already forgotten. Then, by the time they begin to feel accustomed to the new environment, it is often already time for them to go home. Therefore, elderly people who frequently use short-stay facilities—especially those who appear to have dementia—may often find themselves in unstable environments, which can result in extremely difficult caregiving conditions for both family caregivers and care staff. There might be some truth to that, but I felt this was the most demanding workplace I had ever experienced as a care worker. I think this also reflects the reality that elderly care is not always ideal.

ショートステイの場合、認知症の傾向がある利用者の方々にとって、住み慣れた自分の家から、あまり見たこともない（すでに忘れてしまった）施設に慣れるまでにも時間がかかりますし、施設に慣れたと思う頃には帰宅することになるのだろうと思います。なので、ショートステイをたびたび利用される高齢者、特に認知症の傾向がある利用者にとっては、不安定な環境が頻繁にもたらされることになり、家族介護者や介護職員にとっては、かなり過酷な介護状況がもたらされることになってしまうのかもしれません。このようなことも一理あってか、介護職員として勤務したこれまでの職場の中では、一番凄惨とすら感じることになりました。これも高齢者介護のきれいごとばかりではない現実なのだろうと思います。
