Tasks at the group home
At the first group home where I worked, breakfast and dinner were prepared in the kitchen on the floor below and brought up by elevator. For lunch, the residents and staff would go shopping together at a nearby supermarket, and then prepare lunch together using the ingredients they had purchased. Every day, for example, the residents on the floor were given knives and cutting boards to cut carrots, or they were asked to make miso soup on their own. Everyone cooked together in a lively atmosphere, chatting and laughing. At the second group home where I worked, there were basically not enough staff members, so there was almost no time to do anything with the residents. For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the residents ate meals that had already gone cold, which had been prepared in the kitchen downstairs. The third group home, where I worked at the time, did not have a kitchen downstairs, so the staff prepared all three meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—on the floor. The residents helped with plating and some of the cooking, but I think the staff handled most of the preparation. Still, the residents were served freshly cooked, warm meals, which I believe helped create a somewhat homely atmosphere.

グループホームでの業務
一番最初に勤務していたグループホームでは、朝夕は下の階の給食室で作られていた朝食や夕食がエレベーターで運ばれてきていましたが、昼食は、利用者の方々が職員とともに近所のスーパーで買い物してきた食材を使って、利用者の皆さんと職員が一緒になって料理を作っていました。毎日、フロアにいた利用者に包丁やまな板を渡して、例えば人参を切っていただいたり、味噌汁をすべてお任せで作っていただいたりして、みんなでワイワイ言いながら、結構賑やかに料理を作っていました。二番目に勤務していたグループホームでは、基本的に職員の数が足りなかったので、利用者の方々と何かをするということはほとんどなく、下の給食室で作られた、すっかり冷めてしまっていた料理を、利用者の方々は朝昼晩と召し上がっていました。三番目に勤務することになったこのグループホームでは給食室はなく、朝昼晩と、三食を職員が調理するようになっていました。その中で、利用者の方々に盛り付けを手伝っていただいたり、ちょっとした調理を手伝っていただいたりしていましたが、基本的には、職員がほぼ全て準備するようになっていたと思います。それでも、できたての暖かい食事が提供されていたので、利用者の方々は家庭的な雰囲気を多少なりとも味わうことができていたのではないかと思いました。
