Even now, elderly care facilities are short of caregivers, and it seems that there will be a critical shortage of staff in the near future. I know someone who works as a service provision manager at a visiting home help service provider, and he told me that even when they advertise for visiting helpers and other positions, they face the serious situation of receiving no applications at all. I have heard that some elderly care facilities have had to limit the number of users due to staff shortages. While I understand that there are not enough care workers, I was honestly surprised to witness that a situation in which elderly people care for other elderly people—known as "elderly care by the elderly"—has already become a reality in care facilities. As I stood in front of the care workers who were elderly, I thought to myself, "No one would be surprised if you were sitting over there drinking tea instead."

現在でも、介護施設では介護職員が不足しており、近い将来にはかなり危機的な職員の不足が叫ばれているように思います。私の知っている方で、訪問介護事業所のサービス提供責任者をやっている方がいて、その方が話してくださったのですが、ヘルパーなどの介護職員を募集しても、まったく応募がないという状況が深刻に続いているそうです。介護施設の中には、職員が足りないからということで、利用者の数を制限せざるを得ないという話を聞いたこともあります。確かに、介護職員が集まらないという現実はあるのだろうとは思いますが、しかしその一方で、施設でも高齢者が高齢者を介護している“老老介護”という状況がすでに現実のものとして出現してしまっていることに、正直驚いてしまいました。高齢の介護職員の方々を前にして、私自身心の中では、「あなた方は、あちらで座ってお茶でも飲んでいてもおかしくはないのですよ」と思っていました。
