Why do we care for old parents?

Something must be done
I had decided not to renew my research contract in Taiwan, and while I was still there, I searched for a more permanent research position in Japan, but nothing seemed to work out. As a result, I returned to Japan in 2008 without a job (see my previous blog posts). While helping to care for my grandmother with dementia and gradually consuming my savings, I spent my days at my parents’ home reflecting on my past research — on insecticide resistance at the University of Tsukuba and on the evolution of senescence during my time in Edinburgh. One day, as I was rereading a paper by P. B. Medawar, I came across a passage in which he wrote, “Something must be done.” That striking line inspired me to think about elderly care through the lens of the evolutionary genetics I had studied (see my previous blog posts). Over the course of several months, I wrote in detail about the knowledge I had gained through years of practical experience in elderly care facilities. From here, I would like to move on to the main topic — considering elderly care from an evolutionary genetic perspective, based on my firsthand experience in the field of caregiving. However, since I have already discussed many of the points related to this chapter in my book Evolutionary Genetics of Elderly Caring: Why Do We Care for Old Parents?, I would greatly appreciate it if you could refer to that book. In the following sections, I would like to share some behind-the-scenes stories — for instance, the background of how I came to study elderly care from an evolutionary genetic perspective.

台湾での研究員の契約は更新しないことにしていたので、台湾にいたときから日本でのパーマネントに近い研究ポジションを探してはいたものの、手応えはまったくなく、2008年に、結局無職のまま帰国することになってしまいました（以前のブログ参照）。認知症の祖母の介護を手伝いつつ、貯金を食いつぶしながら、これまでの筑波大学での殺虫剤抵抗性の研究やエジンバラで行った老化の進化の研究について実家で振り返っているときに、改めて読み直していたP. B. メダワーの論文の中で書かれていた、“何かをせねばならない”という一節から受けた衝撃に端を発して、私がこれまで学んできた進化遺伝学を背景としながら高齢者介護について考えていこうと思いたったわけですが（以前のブログ参照）、実際に介護施設などで介護職員として数年にわたって働いてきた経験を通して、私自身が高齢者介護について身をもって学んできたことを、これまで何日間にも渡って長々と書き連ねてきました。ここからは、介護の現場で高齢者介護を実際に学んできた経験を通して、高齢者介護を進化遺伝学的に考察するという本題に入りたいと思います。ただ、この章に関連する多くのことについては、すでに拙著『高齢者介護の進化遺伝学　なぜ私たちは年老いた親を介護するのか？』において述べているので、ぜひそちらを参照していただければと思いますが、高齢者介護を進化遺伝学的に研究することの背景などのような裏話的なことをこれから述べていければと思います。
