Regarding the evolutionary genetic models employed here, as mentioned in earlier posts, they are derived from the population dynamics model that I studied at Edinburgh and previously applied to analyze fluctuations in genetic variation associated with insecticide resistance. In the present context, I have extended this framework to a human population in decline—such as the Japanese population, which is experiencing both a falling birthrate and population aging. While insecticide resistance and elderly care appear to be entirely unrelated phenomena, the underlying population models are, in fact, fundamentally the same. Consequently, the research I carried out as a graduate student and postdoctoral researcher continues to inform the evolutionary genetic analyses of elderly care that I am presently conducting. Many people may have questioned why I am now engaged in research on elderly care, given that my earlier work focused on insecticide resistance. In fact, however, the fundamental analytical frameworks I employ remain precisely the same as those I used in my previous research. Therefore, although I studied insecticide resistance as a graduate student and researcher, I have never seen it as contradictory to have worked in care facilities such as group homes for elderly people with dementia. I believe this shows that the research I conducted in the past remains deeply rooted in who I am today.

ここで用いた進化遺伝学的モデルについてですが、すでに以前のブログの中でも述べているように、エジンバラで勉強していたときに学び、殺虫剤抵抗性の遺伝的変異の変動について検討した際に用いた集団動態学的なモデルを、日本人集団などのような、減少しつつある少子高齢化に直面している人間集団に対して適用したものです。詳細は、拙著『高齢者介護の進化遺伝学 なぜ私たちは年老いた親を介護するのか？』を参照していただきたいのですが、殺虫剤抵抗性と高齢者介護という一見すると全く関わりがないように思われるような現象ではあっても、その基本となる集団モデルは、基本的にはまったく同じものだったということで、私が大学院生や研究員として研究してきたことは、その基礎において、現在にわたって行われている高齢者介護の進化遺伝学的研究においてもしっかりと活かされていることになります。殺虫剤抵抗性を研究してきたのに、なんで高齢者介護なんてやっているのかと疑問に思われてきた人も多いのではないかとは思いますが、実際には、私が研究において用いている基本的なツールは、昔も今もまったく同じだったというわけです。なので、大学院生や研究員などとして殺虫剤抵抗性を研究してきたにもかかわらず、認知症高齢者のグループホームなどのような介護事業所で勤務してきたことは、私の中では必ずしも矛盾するものではありませんでしたし、これまで研究してきたことは、私自身の中で今現在も一貫してしっかりと息づいていることがおわかり頂けるのではないかと思います。
