Likewise, if we assume that the long post-reproductive lifespans of older people evolved as a consequence of their contributions to the reproductive success of their offspring, then it may be reasonable to think that human child-rearing is so demanding that it can be carried out only when the presence and assistance of grandparents are presupposed. Recently, there has been considerable discussion about the difficulties faced by young mothers who are left to raise their children alone, including tragic reports of abuse and even murder. It is said that the burden of childcare on each mother—who must also work and manage household duties—is now at its highest level in human history. From an evolutionary perspective, including insights from the grandmother hypothesis, it may not be surprising that such problems have emerged in the childcare environments of today’s young mothers.
In this way, when we think within the framework of evolutionary genetics, we can see that many of the problems currently facing elderly care—fraught as they are with difficulties—may also be connected to a variety of seemingly unrelated issues. If we can reduce these difficulties, even slightly, by trying out various practices in actual elderly care based on this kind of knowledge, I believe that this will also help reduce the stress associated with caregiving. At the very least, in caring for my parents, I would like to accumulate practical knowledge by actually providing care, drawing on the insights and findings from the evolutionary genetic research on elderly care that I have conducted so far.

同じように、高齢者の繁殖後の長いライフ・スパンが子孫の繁殖成功に寄与することによって進化してきたとするならば、人間の子育てはそもそも祖父母の存在、祖父母からの援助を前提として初めて成り立ちうるほどの過酷な任務であるといえるのではないかと思います。虐待や殺人のような痛ましい報道をはじめ、一人で子育てを背負いこんでしまっている現代の若い母親の育児に関する問題が取り沙汰されることも最近ではとても多いように思いますが、仕事もし、家事もこなさなければならない一人の母親にかかる育児の負担は、今や人類史上最高のレベルになっているということです。現在の若い母親たちの育児環境の問題も、祖母仮説を含む進化理論の観点から眺めてみるならば、あるいは予測されていたことなのかもしれません。
このように、進化遺伝学という枠組みの中で考えてみると、現在多くの困難に満ちている高齢者介護に関するさまざまな問題も、一見関わりのないいろいろな問題ともつながっている可能性がみえてくるのではないかと思います。これらの知見に基づいて、実際の高齢者介護のなかでいろいろな実践を試みていくことによって、少しでも困難なことを減らせることができれば、介護によるストレスも減っていくことにつながるのではないかと思います。少なくとも私は、私の両親の介護において、これまでの高齢者介護の進化遺伝学的な研究によって得られた知見に基づいて実際に自分が介護を実践していく中で、いろいろな知見を積み重ねていきたいと考えています。
