Even though I would be able to stay in Edinburgh for only a few more months, I still had not decided on my future career path. Then my former advisor at Tsukuba told me about a research position that was opening up at a certain institute and suggested that I apply for it, so I decided to do so. I wanted to further develop the research on insecticide resistance that I had been conducting at the University of Tsukuba, building on what the graduate student mentioned above had discovered after I graduated. I drew up a research proposal and applied for the position, but unfortunately, I was not successful. With nowhere else to go, my former advisor kindly offered me a position as a part-time researcher in his laboratory at the University of Tsukuba, which allowed me, at least for the time being, to avoid being left out on the streets. However, my advisor was due to retire in a year, so I needed to make the most of that limited time to make further progress and, to some extent, obtain some significant results in the research on insecticide resistance that I had been conducting in the Laboratory of Evolutionary Genetics. Specifically, I decided to pursue the research project mentioned above, which had been rejected when I applied to a certain research institute, with the goal of pushing it forward as much as possible within that year.

もう何か月もエジンバラにいられないにもかかわらず、それでもまだ進路がきまっていないというときに、筑波でお世話になっていた指導教官から、ある研究所での研究員のポジションの募集が出ているので、それに応募してみたらどうかと教えてくださったので、それに応募してみようということになりました。筑波大学で行っていた殺虫剤抵抗性の研究について、私が卒業した後に、上述の大学院生が明らかにしたことを踏まえたうえで、さらにその研究を発展させたいと思い、それについての研究計画をたて、応募してみたのですが、残念ながら不採用になってしまいました。どこにも行く当てがなくなってしまったのですが、筑波大学でお世話になっていた指導教官の研究室で、非常勤の研究員として拾っていただけることになり、とりあえずは路頭に迷うということは回避できることになりました。ただ、指導教官はあと1年で定年となり、退官されるということだったので、その1年間のうちに、自分が進化遺伝学研究室で行ってきた殺虫剤抵抗性の研究について、ある程度の見通しをつけなければならないということになりました。具体的には、上述した、ある研究所に応募した際に不採用となってしまった研究プロジェクトを、1年間のうちにできるだけ推し進めることを目標として、研究を進めさせていただくということになりました。
