Up to that point, I probably did not have a very positive impression of research dealing with genes. However, once I actually began conducting PCR experiments, I found myself becoming quite absorbed in them. In retrospect, this may simply have reflected my own preconceived bias. I have come to feel that if we truly commit ourselves to something, almost any subject can become interesting.

今までは遺伝子を取り扱う研究に対しては、あまり良い印象を持っていなかったのだろうと思いますが、実際にPCR実験をやってみたら、結構夢中になって実験をしていました。まあ、食わず嫌いだったのかなあとも思っています。一生懸命になってやっていたら、多分なんでも面白くなってくるものなのだろうと思います。

This is a textbook I used as a reference while planning my next research project toward the end of my stay in Edinburgh. I had it sent to me from Japan and studied it diligently. The experimental procedures were explained very clearly, and even though I had never handled DNA before, I was able to visualize the experiments in my mind. As I read the explanations in the textbook, I felt as if I were performing the experiments alongside the authors. Later, when I actually carried out PCR experiments at the University of Tsukuba and encountered various problems, I was able to deal with them without panicking, and I believe that was largely because I had carefully studied this textbook. エジンバラ滞在の終盤に、次の研究について計画しているときに参考にさせていただいたテキストです。日本から送ってもらい、勉強させていただきました。実験の手順がとてもわかりやすく説明されており、それまでDNAすら扱ったことのなかった私でも、頭の中でイメージすることができました。テキストに書かれている説明を読みながら、一緒になって実験しているかのような感覚で勉強することが出来ました。実際に筑波大学でPCR実験を行なっていて、トラブルに直面した時にも、慌てずに対処することが出来たのは、このテキストで勉強していたからだと思います。とても勉強になりました。 三代
