Collecting a fresh natural population of Drosophila melanogaster in Katsunuma
At that stage of my research, I was primarily interested in insecticide resistance, particularly in understanding how genetic variation associated with insecticide resistance was maintained and changed in natural populations of D. melanogaster. Although I became deeply involved in laboratory experiments such as PCR, which directly involve working with genes, these activities were always intended as a means to analyze the dynamics of genetic variation in natural populations; analyzing DNA itself was never my primary goal. For this reason, I believe that collecting natural populations in Katsunuma represented a fundamental part of my research.

新たに勝沼でショウジョウバエを採集
私はこれまで殺虫剤抵抗性を研究してきましたが、その興味の中心にあったことというのは、やはり、キイロショウジョウバエ自然集団における殺虫剤抵抗性の遺伝的変異のダイナミクスということになるのだろうと思います。実験室の中で、PCRのような、遺伝子をいじくりまわすような実験を夢中になって行ってきましたが、それもやはり自然集団における遺伝的変異の変動を分析するための、あくまでも手段として行ってきたのであり、遺伝子を扱う分析そのものが目的だったわけではありません。なので、やはり勝沼での自然集団の採集が、私にとっては基本的な部分になるのだろうと思います。
