Visits to France and Germany
While preparing a research proposal for a fellowship in Germany, I arranged to meet face-to-face with a professor at a university in Munich to discuss my research plan, particularly the results of the acetylcholinesterase experiments I had conducted during my year in Tsukuba. Because I was traveling all the way to Europe, I thought it would be a valuable opportunity to ask a world-renowned authority on Drosophila melanogaster acetylcholinesterase in France to look at the results of the research I had conducted in Tsukuba and to offer his criticism and suggestions for my future work. As such a distinguished scholar, I imagined he must have been extremely busy and unlikely to have time for a wandering researcher like me from the Far East. However, to my great gratitude, he kindly agreed to meet me in his office at his research institute in Toulouse, in the south of France, where he offered valuable advice on how I might proceed with my research in the future. It was a hectic schedule: I left Japan on a Monday in mid-January, traveled to France and Germany, and returned to Japan on the Sunday of the same week. Thankfully, my advisor at the University of Tsukuba covered my travel expenses, which made it a very fruitful trip.

フランスとドイツを訪問
ドイツでのフェローシップに応募するための研究のプロポーザルを作成するにあたり、特に筑波での1年間に行ってきたアセチルコリンエステラーゼに関する実験の結果について、ドイツのミュンヘンにある大学の先生のオフィスで直接お目にかかり、研究計画について相談することになりました。せっかくヨーロッパに行くわけですから、この機会に、フランスにいるキイロショウジョウバエのアセチルコリンエステラーゼの世界的な権威に、筑波で行ってきた研究の結果をみていただいて、ご批判をいただくとともに、次の研究に関するご示唆をいただけたらいいなあと思いました。世界的な権威なのですから、お忙しかったでしょうし、私のような極東の浮浪人の相手などしていられなかっただろうと思いますが、とてもありがたいことに、私のために時間を割いていただけることになり、フランス南部のトゥールーズにある研究所の、先生のオフィスで面会し、今後の研究の進め方について、いろいろと相談に乗ってくださることになりました。1月の中旬に、日本を月曜日に発ち、フランスとドイツを巡って、その週の日曜日に日本に帰国するという目まぐるしい強行日程になりましたが、ありがたいことに、筑波大学の指導教官に旅費を出していただくことができ、とても実りの多い旅となりました。
