In the professor’s office at the university in Munich, I explained the results of the genetic research I had conducted at Tsukuba, focusing mainly on acetylcholinesterase, and described the kind of research I hoped to pursue in applying for a fellowship. He gave me many valuable suggestions, particularly about what I should include in my fellowship proposal. He also introduced me to several researchers who were then working in his laboratory and recommended a number of useful papers. In particular, he pointed me to studies useful for examining how mutation patterns in DNA sequences may be shaped when positive selection by insecticides and negative selection in the course of population growth and under ecological conditions act almost simultaneously on mutations in resistance genes. Thus, he gave me many helpful suggestions about the direction my research might take. I was also very impressed by the new and beautiful university building, which seemed to have been built only recently. I remember thinking quite honestly how happy I would be if I could conduct research in such a place.

ミュンヘンにある大学のオフィスで、私がこれまでに筑波で行ってきた、主にアセチルコリンエステラーゼの遺伝学的な研究の結果について先生に説明するとともに、フェローシップに応募するためにどのような研究を行いたいのかをお伝えし、フェローシップ応募のためのプロポーザルとしてどのようなことを書いていけばいいのかといったことについて、いろいろとご示唆をいただきました。当時、先生の研究室で研究員をされていた何人かの研究者に紹介してくださるとともに、例えば、抵抗性遺伝子に存在している変異に対して、殺虫剤によるポジティブな選択圧と、集団の増加過程や生態学的な環境下のもとではたらくネガティブな自然選択圧がほぼ同時にはたらいたときに、DNAの塩基配列に存在する変異のパターンに対してどのような影響がみられるのかといったことについて、参考になるような論文をいくつか教えていただきながら、研究の方向性についていろいろと示唆をいただいたと思います。多分新築されたばかりで、とても新しいきれいな校舎がとても印象に残りました。こんなところで研究できたらいいだろうなあと、素直に感じた記憶があります。
