In the end, I spent two nights in Paris and three nights in Munich. During the trip, I was able to meet prominent professors and discuss my research with them, receiving many valuable suggestions and insights, which made the visit very worthwhile. However, the schedule was extremely tight, and I think I was quite exhausted. I had intended to leave some time for myself on the last day, but a storm ruined my plans, and I was not able to make the most of the opportunity. Although I had stayed in the UK for three and a half years, this was my first visit to continental Europe, so I had really been looking forward to this trip. However, my memories of Paris are mostly of the nighttime scenery, and I was also unable to make the short trip to the Danube because of the storm, which I still regret. Nevertheless, I was very honored to receive several signed papers from a leading French professor specializing in acetylcholinesterase research in D. melanogaster, and the visit itself was very meaningful. However, despite receiving valuable advice and encouragement from prominent professors in France and Germany, I was ultimately unable to obtain a fellowship and move forward with my research. I still feel deeply sorry about this and remain keenly aware of my own limitations.

結局、フランスはパリに2泊、ドイツはミュンヘンに3泊したことになりますが、研究について著名な先生方と面会し、いろいろとご示唆をいただくことができ、大変有意義ではありましたが、とてもタイトな日程であり、大変くたびれてしまったと思います。最終日に多少ゆとりを持ったつもりだったのですが、嵐のために台無しになってしまい、せっかくの機会を活かすことができませんでした。イギリスには3年半滞在していましたが、ヨーロッパ大陸の国々は初めてだったので、とても楽しみにしていたのですが、パリの記憶は夜間の光景しかないわけですし、嵐のためにドナウ川を旅することもできなかったので、とても惜しかったなあと思います。それでも、キイロショウジョウバエのアセチルコリンエステラーゼ研究の第一人者であるフランスの先生からは、直筆のサイン入りの論文をたくさん頂戴することができ、とても光栄に感じますとともに、とても有意義な訪問となりました。しかし、フランス、ドイツの著名な先生方からいろいろとご示唆をいただいておきながら、結局フェローシップを取ることができず、研究を進めることができませんでした。大変申し訳なく思うとともに、自分の力のなさを痛感するところです。
