After completing my research at Tsukuba
I am deeply grateful to my former advisor at the University of Tsukuba for his guidance during my five years as a doctoral student and for his support during my one year as a part-time researcher. Both during my doctoral studies and afterward as a researcher, he made various arrangements that allowed me to pursue the research I wished to conduct, for which I remain very thankful. As I mentioned earlier, the University of Tsukuba has a traditional entomology laboratory with a strong background in agricultural science, similar to the laboratories I had belonged to previously. I can almost imagine people asking, “If you want to study insecticide resistance, why not do it in a laboratory of agricultural science?” However, I wanted to study insecticide resistance as a genetic phenomenon within the framework of evolutionary genetics. I am sure that this must have caused some inconvenience for my advisor, but thanks to his understanding and support, I was able to conduct my research quite freely and without many constraints. As a result, I believe I was able to obtain research results that would probably have been difficult to achieve within the conventional framework of agricultural research on insecticide resistance. For this, I owe a great deal to my advisor, and I am sincerely grateful to him. Although it is very regrettable that I was not able to further develop the research I conducted during my six years at the University of Tsukuba, it is also true that new approaches are not always easily understood within established frameworks. In that sense, perhaps it was unavoidable.

筑波大学での研究を終えて
筑波大学でお世話になっていた指導教官には、博士課程の大学院生として5年間、そして非常勤の研究員として1年間お世話になりました。博士課程のときもそうでしたが、研究員のときも、私がやりたいと考えた研究を行えるように、いろいろと手配してくださり、とても感謝しています。先にも申し上げましたが、筑波大学には、私がこれまで渡り歩いてきたような、伝統的な農学系の昆虫学研究室がありました。殺虫剤抵抗性の研究をするならば、農学系の研究室で研究したらいいではないかという声が聞こえてきそうですが、私はあくまでも進化遺伝学の枠組みの中で殺虫剤抵抗性という遺伝学的現象を研究していきたかったので、指導教官には迷惑な話だったと思いますし、いろいろとご面倒をおかけしてしまったとは思いますが、私自身、とても伸び伸びと研究させていただけたと思います。従来の、農学系の殺虫剤抵抗性研究の枠組みでは、恐らく不可能であったような研究の成果を産み出すことができたのではないかと思っています。これも指導教官のおかげだったと思いますし、指導教官には感謝するばかりです。ただ、筑波大学で行った6年間の研究をさらに進めることができなかったことは、とても残念ではありますが、新たな試みというものは、従来の枠組みの中にいる人々には理解されることも少ないということもまた事実だと思いますので、まあ、是非もないところなのだろうと思います。
